Royals Lose Danny Duffy for the Season

Danny Duffy is headed for surgery. After an MRI revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament in Duffys left elbow, it appears as though Tommy Johnsurgery will sideline the left-hander until next season. An old top prospect within the Might Royals farm system, Duffy reached the majors last season. And even though he struggled initially, the 23-year-old seemed to be making progre s this season. Now that hes out for that season, the Royals rise to prominence may be put on hold even longer. The Royals entered this year's season having among the best farm systems of all time. There wasnt an analyst, apublication or awebsite that disagreed. And while Mike Moustakas Frostee Rucker Jersey and Eric Hosmer have already experienced some succe s in the majors and Wil Myersisnt far behind the Royals show precisely how risky it's to rely on pitching prospects.Duffys injury highlights some of the i sues facing the Royals once-prominent farm system. John Lamb also had Tommy John surgery last June andMike Montgomery has regre sed at Triple-A. While Lamb should make his return a while this season and Montgomery is still just 23-years-old Kansas City needs to be discouraged by the injuries and insufficient development.Of the 3, Duffy looked is the probably to reside up to the prospect billing. He had already reached the majors, and he managed to win a spot in the Royals rotation this spring. Duffys performance, while uneven, was promising. Though he struggled with his control (14.9%), Duffy punched out batters in a nice clip (23.1%). Duffys performance against the Detroit Tigers on April 16, offered promise to what he may become. In that start, Duffy threw 6 Calais Campbell Jersey .2 innings and threw in the towel just three hits, with one walk and 7 strikeouts. But things quickly went downhill for Duffy. He mi sed a start after complaining about elbow tightne s, but he returned to pitch two more games before succumbing to elbow pain throughout a start against the Chicago White Sox. There have already been some questions regarding whether the Royals handled Duffy properly. Duffy threw 90 pitches in the first game back after he first reported elbow sorene s and then he threw 102 pitches in just 4.1 innings against the Boston Red Sox. The Royals didnt think a lot of Duffys sorene s at that time, plus they didnt send him to have an MRI. While that might not have changed anything, the decision to forego an MRI at the first sign of sorene s is odd thinking about the Royals head trainer admittedthat Duffy were built with a tear in the UCL since 2010.Whats strange about this revelation is the fact that Duffy was throwing more difficult than usual this year. After averaging 93.3 mph on his fastball in 2011, Duffy was throwing 95.3 mph this year. Even though it seems logical to a sume pitchers with tears in their elbows wouldnt have the ability to throw as hard, there's some believed that big gains in velocity can lead to Tommy John surgery. Keith Law has mentioned this theory previously, sometimes citing Stephen Strasburg as an example. There are differing opinions, of course. Jeff Zimmerman recently posted an article that said pitchers who experience increased Lyle Sendlein Jersey velocity dont nece sarily end up around the disabled list more often. Duffys injury and his velocity jump only complicates matters. And even if we could prove big velocity increased lead to TJ surgery, we still wouldnt know whether Duffys injury might have been prevented. Because the Royals were aware Duffy already were built with a tear in his elbow, they probably knew this very day would come. So instead of sending him to have an MRI in the first manifestation of sorene s, they let Duffy see if he could overcome it. As they was able to delay surgery for 2 starts, both sides probably knew it was inevitable. The Kurt Warner Jersey Royals have lots of young talent. Hosmer, Moustakas and Myers look like future regulars and Salvador Perez is locked up with a cheap extension. But to field a competitive team, the Royals need their pitchers to emerge, as well. With Duffy and Lamb on the shelf, they needs Montgomery and Jake Odorizzi to begin living as much as their potential. Theres still a chance for this team to place it together one of these years, but things look slightly more discouraging after Duffys injury.
